BOONSBORO, MD - NBC25 has introduced you to a local ghost hunting team,
explained their methods, and showed you what happened as we followed
them to one of their investigations at the Old South Mountain Inn.
After a long night at the Old South Mountain Inn, now comes a task
that's a little more daunting than haunting.
"This is not the movies," explained Bonnie Moran, a SIGHT lead
investigator. "Ghost hunting is actually a little more low-key."
During their investigation at the centuries-old property, the Scientific
Investigation of Ghosts and Hauntings Team (SIGHT) definitely came
across some bizarre happenings. But they'll be the first to admit,
things aren't always what they seem.
Moran added, "Sometimes we can say, `It's not really haunted.
You're not going crazy. It's really this, this and this.'"
So how do we know if a light that flew through an out-take was a true
"orb," or a dust mite uprooted during a kick of frustration?
Investigators describe an orb as something that comes around, changes
direction, and is really white. On the other hand, dust would have come
up and flittered down as if it was following you.
And what about our questionable moments in the dining room? Digital
photos snapped by team members show several unexplained images as well.
"Orbs will be glowing usually. Sometimes they have a purple/blueish
aura. They don't have a nucleus," Moran described.
So what does it all mean? SIGHT heads back to South Mountain Inn,
during the day this time, to present their findings to owner Chad
Dorsey.
"It is haunted," SIGHT investigator Angela Souders said. "While
the activity was not as intense, it was very focused on a certain member
of the television crew. The fact of the matter that it ended when that
person left is a clue."
It turns out, that "person" was apparently me.
As for Dorsey, he says though he was never much of a believer before,
he's now convinced the "haunting" is connected to Lady Madeline
Dahlgren, the original caretaker of the inn.
Dorsey said, "She's just watching her place, taking care of her house.
The spirits that are here, who they may be I don't know. They seem to
like you very much because they were around you all night, but they're
fine with me!"
Even if you may not believe it, the Old South Mountain Inn sure does,
and now they want more. They've even invited SIGHT to return for
another go-round this September, when they say things really start
happening on the property.
If you'd like to learn more about some of the folklore and legends
behind the Old South Mountain Inn, there's a book called "South Mountain
Magic" written by, none other than, Lady Madeline Dahlgren.
She lived on the property from 1876 until her death in 1898.
